If you've never seen a psychiatric provider before, the idea of a "psychiatric evaluation" might feel intimidating — even a little mysterious. You might wonder what they'll ask, what they'll find, or what happens next. That uncertainty is completely normal, and it's one of the reasons we want to walk you through exactly what this process looks like at Stages Health & Wellness.
The short answer: a psychiatric evaluation is a conversation. A thorough, thoughtful one — but a conversation. Here's what you need to know.

What is a psychiatric evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment designed to understand your mental health — your symptoms, your history, your life circumstances, and your goals for care. It's the foundation of everything that comes after: your diagnosis, your treatment plan, your medication decisions (if any), and the partnership you build with your provider.
Think of it as a 360-degree look at you — not just your symptoms, but the whole person experiencing them.
What happens during the appointment?
Your evaluation typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. Your provider will guide the conversation, but this is your space to share openly. Here's what we cover:
Your current concerns — what brought you in, how you've been feeling, and how long it's been going on
Your mental health history — past diagnoses, previous treatments, medications you've tried, and what helped or didn't
Your medical history — physical health conditions and medications matter for psychiatric care
Your family history — patterns of mental health conditions in your family can provide important context
Your daily life — sleep, relationships, work, stress, and lifestyle factors that affect your wellbeing
There are no trick questions and no judgment. The goal is simply to understand your full picture so we can offer you the most effective, personalized care possible.
Will I receive a diagnosis at my first visit?
Sometimes, yes — and sometimes the picture needs a little more time to come into focus. Your provider may share a working diagnosis at the first visit, or they may want to gather more information before making that determination. Either way, you won't leave without a clear next step and an open conversation about what was discussed.
What happens after the evaluation?
Once your evaluation is complete, your provider will walk you through their clinical impressions and recommendations. This might include a diagnosis, a treatment plan (therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, or a combination), and a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress.
You'll always be part of these decisions. Our care philosophy at Stages is rooted in partnership — the best outcomes happen when you're an active participant in your own healing.
